1 John 4:4
4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
This is another Christian favorite, an extremely encouraging verse that is often applied to difficult life circumstances. Although it is clear that John’s purpose in writing this verse was to encourage 1st century Christians to avoid being deceived by false prophets, I believe that there are many appropriate applications. But I also believe that when the verse is misapplied it cheapens its meaning. For example, if I get into a silly argument with someone and proudly proclaim 1 John 4:4. Well in this instance we are using scripture like the Pharisees did, for our own personal gain.
In 1 John 4:4, the author is speaking of two opposing forces (He that is in me, the Holy Spirit) and (he that is in the world or Satan). In the example I gave earlier, there were two worldly spirits appearing to fight against each other but in reality, both are working toward the same goal. 1 John 4:4 is properly applied when we call on the Spirit to strengthen us against attacks that try to draw us outside of the will of God.
Lord, I thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit and the strength that comes with Him. Please always remind me of your presence and help me to avoid the traps of the spirit of this world. In Jesus name Amen.
